I attended another JLD event a couple of weeks ago, this time it was hosted by Wesleyan for Lawyers. It was clearly an event for the purpose of marketing their financial advising services but I thought there was no harm in signing up.

However, I didn’t get a lot out of the session – it just left me with a list of things I should probably check regarding my finances. In summary:

  • Do I have income protection?
  • How long does my firm grant protection? (typically up to a month)
  • What debts do I have?
  • Can I pay off any? Can they be consolidated?
  • Do I have a Credit Card? Do I utilise benefits? e.g. Air miles.
  • Do I have Life Assurance through my firm?
  • How much does my firm contribute to my pension?
  • How much do I contribute? Is it a case of “when they pay me more, I’ll start paying in”
  • What goals do I have for my pension?
  • On my current scheme/contributions what would I get out of it at the end?

Somethings you might like to think about yourself.
